Choosing a Ukulele

A ukulele is one of the easiest ways into music: four nylon strings, a small neck and chords you can learn in an afternoon. We carry Kala soprano ukuleles and starter kits and the Yamaha GL1 guitalele.

Soprano is the smallest and most traditional size, with the bright classic ukulele sound. The Yamaha GL1 is a six-string instrument in a ukulele-size body, tuned like a guitar with a capo at the fifth fret.

Each one is checked and tuned before it ships. Nylon strings stretch for the first few days, so expect to retune often at first.

What size ukulele is best for beginners?

Soprano is the classic starting size and the easiest to carry. Players with larger hands sometimes prefer a bigger size.

How is a ukulele tuned?

G C E A. The fourth string is usually tuned high, which gives the ukulele its bright sound.

Why does my new ukulele go out of tune?

New nylon strings stretch for several days. Keep retuning and they will settle.
