Choosing Strings

Fresh strings are the cheapest upgrade there is. We carry acoustic, electric, classical and bass guitar strings from D'Addario, Elixir, Ernie Ball, Martin and Fender, plus banjo, mandolin and violin sets.

For acoustic guitar, 80/20 bronze is brighter when new and phosphor bronze is a little warmer and keeps its tone longer. Coated strings such as Elixir Nanoweb cost more per set and last longer.

Gauge is string thickness. Lighter sets are easier to press and bend. Heavier sets are louder and fuller. Light gauge is the usual starting point on acoustic, and 10 to 46 on electric.

Questions We Get

How often should I change guitar strings?

When they sound dull, will not stay in tune or feel rough. For a daily player that can be every month or two.

What gauge strings should a beginner use?

Light gauge on acoustic, around 12 to 53, and 10 to 46 or lighter on electric.

Are coated strings worth it?

They cost more per set and last longer, so they suit players who do not want to change strings often.

Can I return strings?

Unopened strings can be returned within 30 days. Opened or used strings cannot.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is free on every order within the United States, with no minimum.
