The Deering Goodtime has been the standard first banjo since 1996. It is built in San Diego, California, with a three-ply violin-grade maple rim and a slender hard rock maple neck, and it weighs only about 4 pounds.

The slim neck, low action and clean fretwork make it easy to play for kids and adults. It suits clawhammer and old-time playing well, and it is light enough to take anywhere.
