Guitar Scale Length Explained 24.75 vs 25.5

Scale length is the distance from the nut to the bridge saddle, the length of string that vibrates. It is printed in every spec sheet and most buyers skip over it. It changes how the guitar feels under your fingers more than almost anything else, so here is what the numbers mean.
The two standards
- 25.5 inches. Fender. Stratocaster, Telecaster, most Squiers, the Yamaha Pacifica and most dreadnought acoustics. Tighter string feel, snappier attack, more sparkle.
- 24.75 inches. Gibson and Epiphone. Les Paul, SG and the Gretsch Streamliner. Slacker strings at the same gauge, easier bends, a warmer, rounder sound.

Why it matters in the hands
Same strings, same tuning, longer scale means more tension. A set of 10s on a Les Paul feels like a set of 9s on a Stratocaster. Frets are also farther apart on a longer scale, which matters for small hands and for wide stretches. Many players who find a Strat tiring love a Les Paul for this reason alone, and the reverse is true for players who want a firm feel.
The in between
PRS splits the difference at 25 inches on the SE Custom 24. It is the reason so many players describe PRS necks as easy without being able to say why. If you cannot decide between the two standards, it is a real answer.
Short scale guitars
Anything under 24 inches. The Taylor GS Mini at 23.5 and the Martin LX1 at 23 feel easy and travel well. The Squier Mini Stratocaster and the Yamaha JR1 are built short for kids. Short scale basses like the Ibanez Mikro do the same for bass players. The trade is a little less volume and a looser feel at standard tuning, so most short scale guitars ship with slightly heavier strings to compensate.

Scale length and strings
When you move between scales, adjust gauge to keep the feel you like. Going from a 25.5 to a 24.75 guitar, go up one gauge. Going the other way, go down one. Our string gauge guide has the sets.
How to use this when you shop
- Small hands or a preference for easy bends, lean 24.75 or shorter.

- Cannot decide, try a 25 inch PRS.
- Travel or a child, go short scale and read best guitars for kids.
