How to Practice Guitar 15 Minutes a Day

Most people who quit guitar do not quit because it is hard. They quit because they practiced for an hour twice, got sore, and then did nothing for three weeks. Fifteen minutes every day beats two hours on Sunday. Here is how to spend them.
Keep the guitar out
Put it on a stand where you sit in the evening. A guitar you can reach without opening a case gets played. This single change does more for progress than any lesson book.

The fifteen minute plan
- One minute. Tune. Every time. Use a tuner.
- Four minutes. Chord changes. Pick two chords you are working on and switch between them slowly and cleanly. Count how many changes you make in a minute and write the number down.
- Five minutes. One song. Play the part you can play, then the part you cannot, slowly.
- Three minutes. Something new. A new chord, a scale shape, a strumming pattern.
- Two minutes. Play for fun. Anything you like, no counting.
Use a metronome
A metronome is the one tool that makes practice honest. Set it slower than you think you need. If the changes are clean, speed it up by a few beats next time. Many tuners have a metronome built in.
Write down the numbers
Chord changes per minute. Metronome speed on a song. These numbers go up slowly, and seeing them go up is what keeps you going on the days it feels like nothing is happening.
Sore fingers
Fingertips hurt for the first two or three weeks and then they stop. Short daily sessions build the calluses faster and hurt less than long ones. If it hurts in the wrist or forearm rather than the fingertips, stop and check your posture and the guitar's setup. High strings make everything harder. Every instrument we ship is set up by hand on our bench in Athens, Tennessee first. Read what a guitar setup is to see what that covers.
When to get help
A few lessons at the start fix the habits that are hard to unlearn later. We teach guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin and fiddle in the shop. See the lessons page.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a beginner practice guitar each day?
Fifteen focused minutes every day works better than long sessions a couple of times a week.
Do I need a metronome to practice guitar?
It is the one tool that keeps practice honest. Many tuners include one.
Why do my fingertips hurt when I play guitar?
Calluses take two or three weeks to form. Short daily sessions build them faster. Pain in the wrist is different and means checking posture and setup.
How do I know I am improving?
Count chord changes per minute and note your metronome speed on a song. Write them down and watch them rise.
