Buying a 5-String Banjo

We stock 5-string banjos from Deering, Gold Tone and Recording King, in openback and resonator styles. Every one is taken out of its box and set up by hand on our bench in Athens, Tennessee before it ships: fresh strings, action and neck relief, intonation, frets and hardware, tuned to pitch.

A resonator banjo has a wooden back that throws the sound forward. It is louder and brighter, and it is the sound of bluegrass. An openback banjo has no resonator, so it is lighter and warmer, and it is the traditional choice for old-time and clawhammer playing.

A banjo has more adjustable parts than a guitar. Head tension, bridge position and tailpiece all change how it sounds, which is why setup matters so much.

Questions We Get

Openback or resonator banjo for a beginner?

Choose a resonator if you know you want to play bluegrass. If you are not sure, an openback is lighter and you can learn either style on it.

What is a good first banjo?

The Deering Goodtime openback, made in California, is a common first banjo. The Gold Tone AC-1 is a lighter-priced way in.

How many strings does a bluegrass banjo have?

Five. The short fifth string is the high drone that gives the banjo its sound.

Do you set up banjos before shipping?

Yes. We set the bridge, check the head and neck, and tune every banjo on our bench before it ships.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is free on every order within the United States, with no minimum.
